Young people to make big splash for Youth Week
Byron Council’s youth development officer, Rita Youssef-Price, said she had been thrilled with the response from young people wanting to help out with this year’s celebrations.
“The aim is for young people to be involved, to take ownership, plan and run their own Youth Week events with the guidance of community workers,” Ms Youssef-Price said.
“It’s important that young people are part of the decision-making process. That way we can be sure of creating an event that they want to go to.”
Ms Youssef-Price said the 15 member strong Youth Committee had decided to hold a giant Make Waves pool party for 12-18 year olds at the Mullumbimby Pool on April 4.
She said she had been inundated with offers of help from young people who wanted to plan and promote the event, perform, cook and hopefully clean up as well.
The group had come up with a great line-up of acts involving local young musicians, poets and comedians, she said.
The Mullumbimby pool’s new inflatable obstacle course would also be a part of the night’s entertainment and with a capacity for only 200 it would be first in, best-dressed.
In addition, the Youth Committee would invite councillors and council staff to attend so they can meet with local young people who want to have a say on youth and community issues.
The pool party will be a drug-free and alcohol-free event with free food, drinks and entry to the pool.
Transport has also been arranged to pick up young people from the northern and southern ends of the shire using the BATBUS.
Byron Council was recently successful in obtaining funding from NSW Department of Community Services, to help contribute towards the cost of the event and transport.
“At this point, we’re heavily into the planning stage and sourcing prices for equipment and catering,” Ms Youssef-Price said.
“The organising committee will be asking local businesses and community groups to support the event with donations for prizes and help with the catering and equipment.”
