Accident case in court

A YOUNG driver involved in a fatal highway accident which killed a 48-year-old local woman at Corindi last year is standing trial in the district court.

Dylan Joseph Hedges, 19, of North Bellingen, is accused of causing the head-on accident, which claimed the life of local woman, Vicki Moncrieff, on May 15, 2009.

He is charged with dangerous driving occasioning death.

On the day of the accident, Hedges is said to have driven about 270 kilometres.

In his defence, he had driven from Bellingen to attend a funeral in Tenterfield.

He was driving home when the accident happened at Corindi, one kilometre north of the highway intersection with Cassons Close.

When interviewed by police, Hedges said he could not remember the impact, but recalled seeing an oncoming red vehicle.

The accident happened about 50 metres south of a Pacific Highway overtaking lane. 

The case is before Judge Garling in the Coffs Harbour District Court.
