Yawn: Stars play it safe with 2013 Emmys red carpet fashion

CLEAN lines, solid colours and lace overlays dominated an elegant, if somewhat boring 2013 Emmys red carpet.

The stars appeared to be playing it safe as they arrived at the 65th annual TV awards at LA's Nokia Theatre.

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara looked red hot, as expected, showing off her curves in a red lace Vera Wang fishtail gown.

The Colombian-born actress didn't seem to have any dramas with the fit of this year's dress after busting out of her glittering green gown at last year's awards.

Not one to be shy, Vergara tweeted photos of her dress ripping in the middle of the ceremony.

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham wore one of the loudest dresses of the evening, a bold teal gown with peach flowers.

Black and white was also a big trend, worn by Kiwi Elisabeth Moss - star of Mad Men and Top of the Lake - Homeland's Morgan Saylor and Leslie Mann.

Lace brought plenty of romance to the red carpet. Homeland star Claire Danes looked beautiful in a cream Atelier Versace gown, while Modern Family's Sarah Hyland went for contrast with a green dress covered in black lace.

Aussie actress Rose Byrne looked beautiful in a soft pink dress showing just a hint of midriff.
