Wowsers! It’s schnauzers

CURRIMUNDI resident Barb Luetjens has no qualms about being identified as a crazy schnauzer lady.

She and her fellow lovers of the moustachioed dogs met for a walk along the off-leash beach at Currimundi yesterday.

"There is a bit of a term 'crazy schnauzer lady'," Mrs Luetjens said.

"There are a few of us in the group that fit that term quite well."

The walk also gave the owners of about 30 schnauzers a chance to meet face to face.

Many of them had only met online through the Schnauzer SEQ Facebook page.

That page recently ticked over to 2000 members.

Mrs Leutjens said she had chosen a schnauzer dog in 2006 because she needed a smart and protective dog that did not shed hair.

"I had decided on a border collie but then I found out I was allergic to dogs," she said.

Her first schnauzer died from cancer in 2013 and she then bought a standard schnauzer named Penny from Schnauzer Rescue New South Wales.

Penny was four-and-a-half when Mrs Luetjens took her in.

"She was a naughty girl for her previous owner," she said.

Mrs Luetjens said she was in love with Penny, who had since been trained.

"My favourite thing is, they are not dogs,"she said.

"They are people with fur and four legs.

"They are too smart for their own good."

Mrs Luetjens said her group of Sunshine Coast schnauzer lovers met for two walks and two luncheons every year.
