World's tallest female b'baller dies

"Margo" Dydek, the 218.4-centimetre (7 feet, 2 inch) Polish basketball centre has died in Brisbane. She was 37.

MALGORZATA "Margo" Dydek, the 218.4-centimetre (7 feet, 2 inch) Polish centre who was the No.1 draft pick in the American Women's National Basketball Association in 1998 and went on to become its leading career shot blocker, has died in Brisbane. She was 37.

Dydek, who was pregnant with her third child, had been in a medically induced coma since having a heart attack at her home in Brisbane on May 19. The baby did not survive.

She was the coach of Northside Wizards, a team in the Queensland Basketball League. During her 10 full seasons in the WNBA, she was the tallest active female basketball player in the world.

No one from the Northside Wizards was available for comment today, but the club posted a tribute on its website saying Dydek had passed away “peacefully and surrounded by her family”.

“RIP Margo from your many friends at Northside Wizards,” the statement, on the club website, read.
