THE 17th World Transplant Games are back bigger and better this year, and will be held in no better location than the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast will come alive August 22-30 when participants from 50 countries will take part in the event, which includes 14 sports including athletics, swimming, table tennis, badminton, lawn bowls, cycling and volleyball.

The Games epitomize the idea of life after organ transplant and donation. They athletes are 'living proof' that organ and tissue donation works.

The World Transplant Games have been around for  almost 30 years. The first Transplant Olympics were held in Portsmouth 1978, when only four teams took part. The Transplant Games have since exploded and now attract around 3000 competitors from across the globe.

The Games are the single biggest organ donation and transplantation awareness event in the world.

There are up to 70 member countries of the World TransplantGames Federation, most of whom  now have their very own National Transplant Sportsorganisations.

The International Summer Games are held every two years while the Winter Games are held every year in between.
