World titles loom for sprinter

WITH only 41 days until she leaves for the biggest meet of her career, Charlotte van Veenendaal is kicking preparations for the IAAF World Championships into overdrive.

On Saturday van Veenendaal competed in her first athletics meet since qualifying for the World Championships as a member of the Australian 4x100m women’s relay team.

Despite being in a heavy training period van Veenendaal finished third in the 60m and fourth in the 100m in races which included the other members of the relay team.

Van Veenendaal leaves for the World Championships in South Korea on August 9 for an intensive relay camp with her team-mates and coach Sharon Hannan.

Van Veenendaal’s coach Gerrard Keating said the heavy training workload would continue right up until she departs.

“We’re in the middle of some really, really hard training.  Harder than she’s trained in her entire life so last weekend she ran faster than we expected,” Keating said.
