Wonder pill for healthy diets

WITH one pop of this new pill you will be able to tailor your diet to what food works best for you.

Scientists from RMIT University in Melbourne have developed a breakthrough pill which will allow people to customise their diets to suit their body's needs.

In a matter of months professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh hopes to have the "gut reaction smart pill" in doctors hands which he says will give patients reliable information on what types of food they should be eating.

"When food is processed gases are produced and from this activity we can tell how healthy your gut is and what effect the food you eat is having on your body," he said.

"The smart pills allow us to identify precisely where the gases are produced and help us understand the microbial activity in these areas - it's the first step in demolishing the myths of food effects on our body and replacing those myths with hard facts."

"There are so many Hollywood diets and people just follow one celebrity after the other but you never know what they actually do," he said.

Professor Kalantar-zadeh and his team have also developed an application for smart phones so that information collected by the pill can be sent straight to your phone.

The pill will also be used as a reliable tool for detecting and treating colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

"No one is the same and diets have to be individualised so through the pill we will see what food is good for who and pin down what works and what doesn't," he said.

The pill was trialed on 56 pigs and is now being trialed on people.

"It should be in the hands of doctors in a matter of months and then within the next five years, hopefully on supermarket shelves," professor Kalantar-zadeh said.
