Woman's body found in river

THE worst fears of the family of a Mullumbimby woman missing since Thursday evening were realised on Saturday when her body was found in the Brunswick River at Mullumbimby.

Audrey Woods, 82, was last seen at 3.15pm on Thursday outside the Coolamon Villa in Azalea Street, Mullumbimby.

Mrs Woods had been a resident of Coolamon Villa of four years.

Concerned for her safety, staff of Coolamon Villa began a search for Mrs Woods on Thursday evening.

Mrs Woods was believed to be lightly dressed and carrying no money at the time of her disappearance.

A full-scale search was mounted at 7.30am on Friday. NSW Police, assisted by the SES, Volunteer Rescue Association and the Westpac Lifesaver heli- copter scoured bushland and the area surrounding the villa.

A 20-strong team led by inspector Darren Steel of the Tweed-Byron Local Area Command was assisted by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter.

Variable terrain in the area, which included residential housing blocks, small holdings, larger paddocks, park land and waterways, provided a myriad of locations to be searched.

The search for Mrs Woods was suspended because of bad light on Friday evening.

The search resumed on Saturday morning, with the body of Mrs Woods being found in the Brunswick River north of the Coolamon Villa about 4.05pm on Saturday. An investigation by Coolamon Villa into the circumstances of Mrs Woods' disap- pearance is expected to be conducted.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, but there are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mrs Woods' death.
