Wintersun set to shine on Coffs

ROLL out the hot rod, pull on the poodle skirt and slam the platter on the record player, Wintersun is coming.

It was announced yesterday that the popular 10-day Wintersun Festival will be held in Coffs Harbour in June, 2012.

The family flavoured nostalgia festival, which combines rock and roll music, rockabilly, dance and cars, will run from June 1-11 and Coffs Harbour mayor Cr Keith Rhoades said the event was expected to add about $10 million to the local economy and attract more than 1000 vehicles as well as bands, dancers, musicians and fans.

The news came on the same day it was revealed we have also secured the national junior surfing titles (see back page).

Established 24 years ago in Queensland, the Wintersun Festival has been attracted to regional NSW by Events NSW and will be held in Port Macquarie this month before moving to Coffs Harbour next year.

The celebration of music, dance and transport from the 1950s and '60s has attracted more than 70,000 people to Coolangatta in past years, but the chairman of the board for Wintersun, Don Rafter, said they understood they would have to build up local support for the event. Festival director Barry McNamara said they should put two weeks of similar weather in their contract for 2012.

The jetty foreshores will be the main venue for the event which will have a number of different stages, stalls and exhibition areas.
