Winter Whales to hand over cash

AFTER the Big Swim ... come the cheque presentations.
On Sunday morning at the Byron Bay Surf Club, the Byron Bay Winter Whales will hand over $71,000 to 18 charities and groups, the result of yet another hugely successful Beach Hotel Ocean Swim Classic.
That will bring the total handed out by the Winter Whales in the 24 years of the event to $434,681.
With planning already under way for next year’s 25th Big Swim, that total is almost certain to top the half million dollar mark.
This year’s swim last month attracted 1901 competitors of all ages, a far cry from the 65 entries in the first event in 1988.
Recipients of cheques this year include the surf club, Salvation Army, Camp Quality, Variety, Byron Bay Swimming Club, breast and prostate cancer support groups and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
