Winter Whales in 70k cash splash

THE Byron Bay Winter Whales donated $70,000 to 18 charities and community groups on Sunday at the Byron Bay Surf Club.
The money was raised at this year’s Beach Hotel Ocean Swim Classic which attracted 1901 entries, a huge increase from the 65 swimmers in the first “big swim” back in 1988.
Groups benefiting from the efforts of the Winter Whales included the Byron Bay Surf Club, Salvation Army, Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, Marine Rescue, Byron Bay Swimming Club and Byron Bay Scouts.
Planning has already started for next year’s 25th big swim.
