Whincup signs with Triple-Eight Engineering

HE may have a record six titles under his belt, but V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup has no plans to stop at that, re-signing with Triple Eight Engineering until the end of the 2018 season.

The 31-year-old, who overtook five-time winners Mark Skaife, Ian Geoghegan and Dick Johnson as the sole record-holder last season, said the deal would allow him to stay on beyond the introduction of turbo-charged six or four-cylinder engines to the competition from 2017.

"A one-year contract seemed like a bit of a waste of time with the changes coming in 2017, so the decision was to renew for three years so that I'll have at least two years with Triple Eight in the new generation cars," Whincup said.

Teammate Craig Lowndes is also off contract at the end of the season, Triple Eight owner Roland Dane saying he hoped to announce a new extended deal soon.

The V8s will kick off season 2015 with a Super Testing weekend in Sydney starting tomorrow.
