Whincup makes short work of pit-stop penalty

HOLDEN driver Jamie Whincup displayed his true qualities at the Sandown 500 yesterday, coming back to win the endurance event after dropping back to 25th.

Whincup was handed a drive-through penalty after spinning his wheels during a pit stop on lap 70 of the 161-lap event.

But Whincup fought back, after a strong start by co-driver Paul Dumbrell, to take the lead on lap 152.

It was a strong indication Whincup is back in the groove as he held onto his championship lead.

Whincup's Red Bull Racing Australia teammate Craig Lowndes was second, with earlier pole sitter, Pepsi Max Crew FPR Ford's Will Davison in third.

Lowndes and Davison are just 96 and 97 points respectively points behind Whincup in the overall championship standings.
