Westfield shopping centres make hit list in terror video

AN Islamic militant group has mentioned the Westfield Group in a new video calling for attacks on western shopping centres.

According to AFP, the Somalia-based group known as the Shebab has posted a documentary-style video online about its 2013 terror attack on a Nairobi mall that left 67 people dead.

A masked fighter then appears and suggests similar attacks could happen at other malls.

"If just a handful of mujahideen fighters could bring Kenya to a complete stand-still for nearly a week, just imagine what the dedicated mujahideen could do in the West to American or Jewish shopping centres across the world," the militant says in the video.

The militant goes on to mention the "Jewish-owned Westfield shopping centres dotted right around the Western world."

There are 39 Westfield shopping centres around Australia including several in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.    Frank Lowry, the co-founder of the Westfield Group is a joint Australian Israeli citizen.

Last year the Westfield Group separated its Australian and New Zealand business from its international operations. The Australian and New Zealand shopping centres are now owned and managed by Scentre Group.

Westfield has hit out at the threats, saying there is no evidence of an imminent threat to their centres.

"As always Westfield Corporation will take every available step to keep our shopping centres safe for staff, retailers and customers," the statement read.

"Westfield Corporation's policy is to not publicly discuss security procedures, however our heads of security in the US and UK continue to coordinate their activities with police and government agencies.

"As usual significant resources continue to be devoted to security arrangements in our shopping centres and they continue to operate as normal."
