NICKLIN MP Peter Wellington says he and prime ministerial hopeful Clive Palmer are "loose cannons" on the political landscape.

In a boisterous and animated address to State Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Wellington openly pledged his support for the Palmer United Party leader.

He used the need to upgrade and duplicate the Nambour-Brisbane rail line to lead into who he would support come September 7.

"Mr Palmer is like me: we will not simply sit here and do what the party requires us to do," he said.

"If we can get Mr Palmer elected he will stand up in Federal Parliament and speak passionately about the issues and needs of the greater Sunshine Coast region, and hopefully, all of Australia.

"So he is like me. We are loose cannons. We will stand up and speak on issues we are passionate about."

Mr Wellington said the rail line duplication was a nation-building project that presented significant job opportunities.

"Mr Palmer shares with me the view that if the federal and state governments put real money on the table this nation-building project would create significant jobs," he said.

Describing who was on his last train trip, Mr Wellington struck out an interjection from a listening MP that a dinosaur was also on board.
