WATCH: The young Aussie actor playing Barack Obama

AUDIENCES are about to get a touching glimpse of a young Barack Obama little more than a month before he finishes up eight years as the President of the United States.

Barry, a new film from Netflix, will be released on December 16 and it's a young Aussie gaining rave reviews for his portrayal of the American leader.

Devon Terrell was only 19 when he first hoped to play the president, and was able to fulfill that dream when he was cast several years later to play the 20-year-old Obama.

The film follows Obama's first year at Columbia University in 1981.

Its Aussie star told GQ he worked with a voice coach to nail Obama's distinctive, and world-famous, accent.
The film is the first big role for Terrell.

"In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates," Netflix said.
