Is Warren Truss preparing to say goodbye to politics?

SPECULATION that Deputy Prime Minister and Wide Bay MP Warren Truss could be preparing to step down as Nationals leader before the next election is reaching a crescendo.

ABC News is reporting that Nationals MPs are suggesting Mr Truss may step down from his position within the next fortnight, but Mr Truss is yet to give a firm answer.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is thought to be delaying a change to his Cabinet until the Deputy Prime Minister makes his intentions clear.

If he was to step down, Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce is considered the natural successor, but Riverina MP Michael McCormack is rumoured to also be considering a tilt at the top Nationals job.

He declined to discuss his own plans during a press conference on Thursday, saying, "...if and when Warren Truss decides to retire, then we'll see what happens then".

Mr Joyce is thought to have the most support if he went for the leadership position.
