Waller on notice after three race horses fail drug tests

A CLOUD has been thrown over tomorrow's Sydney Cup meeting at Randwick with leading trainer Chris Waller called to front a stewards panel today after three of his gallopers returned positive drug tests.

Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, was detected in raceday samples taken from Arinosa when she won the Listed Wenona Girl Quality at Warwick Farm on March 16, Gosford winner Seuss on February 14, and Jade Marauder when unplaced at Rosehill on February 16 and again when unplaced at Warwick Farm on March 16.

Racing NSW received notification of the positive tests from the Chem Centre Western Australia, and moved quickly to open an inquiry.

A stewards release yesterday said, "Further, stewards advise that on the 19th, 20th and 25th March 2013, feed samples and 11 containers of a manufactured feed product were taken by stewards from the Rosehill stables of trainer Mr Chris Waller and delivered to the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory for analysis for the presence of Ibuprofen.

"Non-raceday samples were collected on the 20th March 2013 from seven horses in Mr Waller's stable and were also sent for analysis.

"The results of those tests will be presented to the inquiry."

In July 2010, New South Wales trainer Paul Theobald was fined $5000 after Dragon's Keep returned a positive test to Ibuprofen after winning at Orange three months earlier.

Waller trained two Group One winners at Randwick last Saturday, Royal Descent winning the Australian Oaks and Sacred Falls taking out the Doncaster Mile.

He is the trainer of Sydney Cup favourite Kelinni which was listed at $3.20 with Tattsbet yesterday.

Kelinni won the JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick on a heavy track last Saturday.

The five-year-old should have no trouble stepping up to the 3200m after finishing fourth to Green Moon in last year's Melbourne Cup.

Second favourite at $4.40 was the Hawkes-trained Maluckyday which should also appreciate the extra trip after finishing sixth last start behind Fiveandahalfstars in the Group 1 BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 6.

The son of Zabeel finished second to Americain in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, but was well beaten when 19th to Green Moon last year.
