Wallabies glad to have star Matt Giteau back

AFTER a four-year absence, world-class playmaker Matt Giteau is back in the green-and-gold.

Giteau will earn his 93rd Test cap at inside centre against South Africa in tomorrow night's Rugby Championship match in Brisbane after the rules on Australian players based overseas were tweaked to allow them to play for the Wallabies.

The 32-year-old has spent the past four years with French club Toulon, winning three European titles and being named the competition's player of the year in 2013-14.

Australian coach Michael Cheika said he was thrilled Giteau (pictured) was again able to play for his country.

"Matt is a true professional and his impact on the team dynamic has been immediate," Cheika said.

Giteau will play alongside the Queensland Reds pair of Will Genia and Quade Cooper, who return to the run-on team together for the first time since November 2013.

Meanwhile, New Zealand coach Steve Hansen has admitted he was concerned some of his players were more concerned about the coming World Cup than the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks begin the defence of their title against Argentina in Christchurch tonight, Hansen saying: "There are 41 players and everyone knows we can only take 31 to the World Cup, so there is a little bit of edge."

Wallabies: James Slipper, Stephen Moore (c), Sekope Kepu, Will Skelton, Rob Simmons, Scott Fardy, Michael Hooper, Scott Higginbotham, Will Genia, Quade Cooper, Rob Horne, Matt Giteau, Tevita Kuridrani, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Israel Folau: Reserves: Tatafu Polota-Nau, Scott Sio, Greg Holmes, James Horwill, David Pocock, Nick Phipps, Matt Toomua, Drew Mitchell.
