Palmer election win 'a mandate for $2.5B resort'

A KEY Clive Palmer staff member believes the Member for Fairfax has a mandate to build a $2.5 billion resort at Yaroomba.

Palmer Coolum Resort manager Bill Schoch said the mining magnate had made his plans for the area clear during his election campaign.

"The votes he got are for what he has been proposing what he wants to do for the Sunshine Coast," Mr Schoch said.

"So we believe his endorsement by voters is a support for Clive and what he has been proposing.

"There will be community consultation when it comes down to what we put there."

Mr Schoch said the State Government's announcement of a planned $1.1 billion beachfront development by Sekisui House next to Mr Palmer's land at Yaroomba was "more violent than a slap in the face".

He said there was only room for one large-scale beachfront development and he questioned whether it would be given to a "Japanese company rather than an Australian".

Mr Schoch said Mr Palmer had not dismissed plans to have a gambling element as part of the development proposal.

"The thing Clive is strong on is that gambling activities for locals is totally discouraged," Mr Schoch said.

"He is not about creating community traps. There are restrictions in place even in a place like Singapore (for locals). It is not going to be a pokie palace for locals."

Mr Palmer unveiled concept plans for a 1000-room beachfront resort and 5000-capacity convention centre in August last year.

Mr Schoch said they believed they now had residents' approval, but would still go to locals with the final plans.

"Since Clive has been elected, we now have the mandate to go ahead with it," Mr Schoch said.

He gave no timelines for the project.

He said it was encouraging that Premier Campbell Newman had indicated there was room for a major project on the Sunshine Coast.

But he said the government's vocal support for the Sekisui House proposal was "the sort of thing you expect in kindergarten".
