THERE WAS little love for Vern Fitzgerald's breakfast pizza on MasterChef last night.
The bar manager was the first contestant culled from the Top 10 in the breakfast challenge set at judge Gary Mehigan's Boathouse restaurant.
The 32-year-old struggled to transform his Japanese-inspired dish to meet the time restriction.
"It just wasn't really a dish that should have gone on to a pizza," he said.
"The original dish idea was very simple with some nice grilled asparagus, a bit of smoked trout and eggs on toast with Miso butter.
"The dish changed significantly….and it was my undoing."
Fitzgerald is now back home in Sydney where he is working on Project Umami with fellow MasterChef contestant Nicky Agahari.
"We're looking at new food trends and introducing them to the public," he said.
"The way we're going to engage customers is getting involved in the local markets."
He's also helping a friend establish a new food festival called Fresh Bake.
He tips frontrunner Rishi Desai to win the fifth series of the reality cooking show.
"I was good mates with him in the house and he's a fantastic cook," he said.
"He deals well with pressure. Looking back over the past weeks of competition, he's been in eliminations but always got through. He's a really strong contender."
MasterChef continues tonight at 7.30pm on Ten.
