Upcoming work on dismantling monorail to be 'difficult'

DISMANTLING Sydney's iconic monorail reached the half-way point on Wednesday, with carriage pieces headed for Google headquarters and museums.

Since work began last month, crews have worked every night to remove 3.6kms of track and 153 steel support columns from the CBD and avoid peak hour traffic.

While 50% has now been removed, a spokesman for NSW Transport admitted on Wednesday that the more difficult parts of the project were still to come.

In the coming weeks, work will begin along the arterial Liverpool, Market and Pitt Sts.

Parts of the track will also be removed near Darling Harbour's Pyrmont Bridge, forcing the closure of the Western Distributor for brief periods of two weekends.

Major demolition work is expected to be finished later this year.

The NSW Government has pledged to recycle about 90% of the monorail infrastructure.

More than 500 tonnes of steel will be used on a temporary road bridge as part of the North West Rail Link project.
