United win leaves Sunderland deep in trouble

FOOTBALL: A 3-0 win for Manchester United at the Stadium of Light has left Sunderland 10 points off safety at the bottom of the English Premier League.

David Moyes' team suffered defeat for the 21st league game this season and has now gone 11 hours and 15 minutes without scoring in the top flight.

They look certainties for the drop to the Championship with just seven games remaining and having not found the back of the net for seven games.

It is hard to see where another win is going to come from and relegation could be confirmed as soon as April 26 - with five games remaining.

United eased to victory to climb to fifth in the table.

Sunderland was not helped by the controversial sending off of Sebastian Larsson for a challenge on Ander Herrera.

Forced to play with 10 men for more than 45 minutes, the home team was powerless to stop the visitors, who had already gone ahead through Zlatan Ibrahimovic before the red card.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 2-0 before Marcus Rashford drilled in the third.

United, moved ahead of Arsenal and is four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with one game in hand over its neighbours.

Arsenal had the chance to regain fifth place with a win over Crystal Palace Tuesday morning (AEST).

Meanwhile, Leicester's winning run under Craig Shakespeare has come to an end with a 4-2 defeat at Everton.

The reigning EPL champions had won six from six after Shakespeare took over from the sacked Claudio Ranieri.

But they came undone as Romelu Lukaku scored twice to help tthe Toffees come from 2-1 down for a seventh straight home success.

Lukaku now has 23 goals for the season.
