Tragedy strikes University Games

THE Eastern University Games in Coffs Harbour have been overshadowed by the tragic death of a young Sydney man.

The Gladesville 20-year-old – who was visiting Coffs Harbour for the games – died in hospital at 4.30am today after he was struck by a car on the Pacific Highway at Sapphire.

The man stepped out of a maxi cab at 10.15pm on Sunday and ran in front of the taxi into the path of a southbound car, police said.

He was struck by the red Mazda 323, driven by a Queensland woman, 25.

The man sustained serious head injuries and a broken foot in the accident.

He was taken in a critical condition to Coffs Harbour Health Campus but died before he could be transferred to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital for specialist treatment.

Police are continuing their inquiries into the accident and are preparing a report for the coroner.
