Uni app aids students hunting for bargains
A NEW Smartphone application, linking Mackay's students with local retailers through exclusive deals and discounts, is nearing completion and expected to be launched soon.
The Feed, which will connect more than 17,000 students from across Mackay with local retailers, will be released early this year, thanks to a partnership between Study Mackay and BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal.
A Study Mackay working group surveyed 5% of Mackay student in order to gauge what discounts they accessed and their awareness of what was available to them.
Study Mackay chairman and CQUniversity's pro vice-chancellor Professor Pierre Viljoen said the conclusions from the survey indicated the Mackay region did not have a Student Discount culture in its business and retail community, nor does it have an avenue to foster one, despite strong demand.
"It's Study Mackay and BMC's intention that the app will provide an avenue for retailers and businesses to help support students and assist local businesses to attract the student demographic through their doors," Prof Viljoen said. "Providing affordable living for students in Mackay will encourage them to remain in the region as well as attract further students to study here.
"The long-term benefits of this are that our local businesses will have greater access to a skilled labour."
The survey showed that 62.2% of the sample indicated they did not access discounts in Mackay, which could indicate a lack of discounts on offer.
A further 41% of students indicated they did not even hear about student discounts in Mackay. About 775% of students indicated they owned a smartphone, so a smart phone app was a suitable method to administer a student discount program.
