UFC champ wins Comm Games wrestling spot

ROBERT Whittaker is set create history - again - as the first active UFC champion to compete at a Commonwealth Games.

Only two months after becoming Australia's first UFC champ, The Daily Telegraph can reveal Whittaker has finally been rubber stamped to join Australia's wrestling team at the upcoming Gold Coast Games, starting April 4.

UFC president Dana White is aware of the decision, which has been delayed for several months after a handful athletes appealed their omissions.

However, those appeals have this week been overruled, leaving Wrestling Australia to confirm the UFC middleweight star's groundbreaking move at a team selection announcement later this week.

Already, Whittaker has spoken at length of his desire to represent Australia at the Games.

His coaches are also more than happy for the man dubbed 'Bobby Knuckles' to compete, adamant the Gold Coast event doubles as a perfect preparation for his first title defence against Cuban Yoel Romero later this year.

The Sydneysider will represent Australia in the 91kg division.
