Caloundra plane crash pilot in serious condition

UPDATE 3.45PM: The pilot of a light aircraft that crashed at Caloundra Aerodrome with three passengers on board suffered multi-trauma injuries.

The pilot's injuries were critical and he was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

2.15PM UPDATE: The Sling 4 light plane that crashed at Caloundra, injuring three men and a woman, was flying with other aircraft when things went wrong.

The pilot and his three passengers were on a joy flight from Jacobs Well to Caloundra when the plane flipped just short of the runway at Caloundra Aerodrome.

Sunshine Coast Police District Inspector Matt Wilson could not confirm early reports the aircraft had made two failed attempts at landing before crashing.

"Look it's early days and obviously that'll be subject of the investigation as to the cause of the accident," he said.

"But it would appear that the aircraft may have been in a pattern with a number of other aircraft, a pattern to land, when obviously the landing has gone awry."

The pilot suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

His passengers, were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

1.45PM UPDATE: A 49-year-old pilot has been taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a serious condition after a light plane crash at Caloundra.

Police say the man and his three passengers, who are believed to be related, were on a joyflight from Jacobs Well when the light aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Caloundra Airport about 11.45am.

Aerial photos showed the Sling 4 plane was extensively damaged in the crash.

Two occupants - a man and a woman - freed themselves from the wreckage.

Emergency crews took more than an hour to free the pilot and a 24-year-old man who were trapped inside the wreckage just short of the runway.

Sunshine Coast Police District Inspector Matt Wilson said the airport would remain closed for some time.

"Enquiries are underway to establish the cause of the accident, that includes the Australian Transport Safety Bureau being advised, and we're making the necessary arrangements through our forensic crash officers to investigate the cause of the accident," he said.

"The situation is under control, there's no risk of fire or explosion and all passengers have been removed from the aircraft."

1PM UPDATE: EMERGENCY crews are working to free two men trapped in the wreckage of a light plane which crashed at Caloundra Airport this morning.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman has confirmed the men, aged about 45 and 24, are trapped by their lower bodies.

Their condition is not known.

Two other occupants of the plane - a man and a woman whose ages are unknown - were able to free themselves from the wreckage shortly after the 11.45am crash.

The Lifeflight Rescue Helicopter landed near the crash site earlier but left soon after.

A Sunshine Coast Daily team is at the scene but is being kept well back from the crash.
