Twitter fraud angers Greens runner

BYRON Shire mayor and Greens candidate for the NSW Upper House Jan Barham has complained to police after an impostor used her name, image and The Greens logo to post inflammatory comments on social media site Twitter.

Cr Barham, who says she has never held a Facebook or Twitter account, only became aware of the fraud when contacted by a Sydney journalist.

The fake comments included one that suggested those without tertiary education were intellectually inferior.

“The irony is, I don’t have a degree – I’m TAFE educated,” she said.

Cr Barham reported the fraud to police on Saturday and Twitter took down the account after she complained.

However, she is angry that her image is still being used on a parody account.

Cr Barham said she had no idea who was responsible.

The anonymity of the internet made it virtually impossible to track down the culprit, she said.

“It’s obviously someone who doesn’t like me or my policies and they are using it as an opportunity to be mischievous ... and to create a bad feeling about The Greens,” she said.
