Coast to embrace V8 Supercars

TONY Cochrane has urged the Gold Coast to embrace the future of motorsport in the city and to “bugger” the past.

In a bold statement at the Gold Coast 600 launch at Palazzo Versace on Tuesday night, the V8 Supercars Australia chairman said the importance of his event could not be understated.

The supercars saved the event last year when the A1Grand Prix, a replacement for the Indy cars, didn’t show up.

With a full year of planning under its belt, V8 Supercars has organised a 20th anniversary event featuring a top-class entertainment bill, plus 18 internationally-renowned drivers to join Australia’s stars on the track.

“Everybody here this week wants me to talk about the past, well to quote an Australian vernacular: ‘bugger the past’.

“We are about the future and I think this event has got a great future here on the Gold Coast,” Mr Cochrane said at the launch.

He praised premier Anna Bligh for having the “guts” to back the event.

“The importance of this event to the Gold Coast goes without saying, I am not going to try and kid anyone and say that the Gold Coast is in great shape at the moment, it is not.

“We have been hit pretty hard in the construction industry here and clearly tourism, our number one earner, has had a tough time with the GFC and the wettest winter we have ever had.

“But we are assured of good weather on the weekend and it is really important the Gold Coast has a stunning event this weekend and it re-kicks, rejuvenates and re-gets-the-party-going for its tourism assets which are so important to our community.”
