Tweed cop goes above and beyond to save woman

Updated Report, 10.39am: TWEED Police have publicly acknowledged an officer who went above and beyond the call of duty on Friday afternoon to save a woman swept out to sea.

They also said there will be some "formal recognition down the track".

An officer from Tweed Byron LAC stripped down and swam out to rescue a woman who was swept at least 250m out to sea, saving her from drowning.

Police made a statement on their Facebook page recognising the officer's heroic efforts, but did not release his name.

"Yes, it was well above and beyond but the involved officer was back on the job once he was sure the young lady was in good hands," it said.

"There will be some formal recognition down the track. I am sure even though in his modesty the officer said 'Just doing my job'; I think you will all agree that the photo of him bringing her to the beach says it all.

"All his colleagues are just a 'bit' proud tonight."

The woman sustained serious injuries and was in a critical condition on Friday. It cannot be confirmed at this time whether the woman's condition has changed.
