Jack Reed's effort worthy of try of the year

TRY OF THE YEAR NOMINATION: The Broncos' Jack Reed's 29th-minute dive over after 10 players handled in the lead-up. It featured miracle passes off the ground and behind the back and exceptional handling as play swept from the right side of the field back to the left.

BEST SUPERMAN IMPERSONATION: Winger Curtis Rona for his 16th try of the season. How good is this guy in the air? All he needs is some red undies and a matching cape. His effort to fly outside the sideline yet reach around the corner post with his right hand to ground the ball within a cigarette paper of being in touch was amazing, yet he made it look easy.

HOP, STEP AND JUMP TRY: Newcastle fullback Jake Mamo could have a crack at the Olympic triple jump after his flying effort to fling himself fearlessly through the air to knock his own chip kick - which was well over the dead ball line - back in play for teammate Carlos Tuimavave to score a freakish try. It deserved better than a 30-28 loss to the Sharks.

THIRD-TIME LUCKY: Only a player with Johnathan Thurston's competitive nature and never-say-die attitude would have kicked the match-winning field goal for the Cowboys after twice in 30 seconds having attempts charged down. Any other player would have been gun shy to try a third kick but not JT. It's little wonder bookmakers have JT an odds-on favourite to win yet another Dally M player of the year.

AS A tribute to one of the best 80-minute defensive efforts in NRL history we have decided APN's team of the week for round 15 will be the Brisbane Broncos side which set all kinds of records in its amazing 14-12 win over Melbourne at AAMI Park. With respect to several players, including North Queensland skipper Johnathan Thurston, who got the Cowboys home for their 11th straight NRL win, Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson and the other players who were instrumental in their side's success, the performance by the Broncos team to keep Melbourne scoreless for the final 45 minutes with four players backing up from State of Origin was astonishing.
