Triple bogey puts paid to Bowditch in Pebble Beach

FORMER Peregian Beach golfer Steven Bowditch dropped to equal 144th on the leaderboard at the Pebble Beach National Pro Am in California yesterday after shooting a one-over 73 in the second round.

A triple bogey on the 14th wrecked Bowditch's round and was a major factor in the 31-year-old missing the cut.

Perfect conditions at Monterey Peninsula meant Bowditch (pictured) had to be at his best.

He bogeyed only one other hole - the second - and had three birdies on the day, but could not keep pace with a classy field led by America's Brandt Snedeker and Australia's Matt Jones.

That pair shared the lead on 12-under 131, one shot ahead of Justin Hicks, who shot a 68 yesterday.

Snedeker, who won at Pebble Beach two years ago, said: "When the weather is good you need to be able to get after it and shoot a low round. And the way the scores are right now and the weather forecast over the weekend, it's going to take ... somewhere around 20-under par to win this golf tournament.

"So I've got to look at seven to 10 under par the next couple of days to win."

Colourfully dressed John Daly shared the lead briefly but did not make birdie in his last 11 holes and dropped to equal 37th.

Daly had previously missed the cut at Pebble Beach 11 consecutive times.
