Trio race to rescue of woman doused in petrol, lit on fire

THREE young heroes who rescued a woman from an enraged man armed with a petrol drum and matches have been recommended for bravery awards.

The trio ran to the woman's aid when they saw her being attacked in a Central Coast street on the weekend.

Police allege a 57-year-old man stopped his ex-partner in the driveway of her home, pulled her out of her car, punched her, poured petrol over her and threw lit pieces of paper at her.

One boy wrestled matches off the alleged attacker and tossed them away, another got a hose and started to wash the fuel off the victim and the third checked on the safety of the victim's elderly mother.

When the man caught up with the victim and allegedly attempted to pour fuel on her and the driveway before trying to light it, one of the boys shut the door on him.

The man then fled in his car.

The woman was decontaminated and treated from blistering to her torso and scratches to her nose and eye.

Police tracked the man to a nearby road and allegedly found the burnt pieces of paper on his front passenger seat and an empty 20litre petrol drum on the back seat.

The man was arrested and charged with assault, stalking, maliciously cast/throw explosive substance with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and domestic violence offences.

He appeared in the Gosford Local Court Monday and was refused bail.

A Brisbane Local Area Command spokesperson said police frequently reported youth related crime and anti-social behaviour in the region and it was "was to see an example of the outstanding young people who are in the community".
