Trial date set for Jill Meagher's accued killer

THE man accused of killing Melbourne woman Jill Meagher has been ordered to stand trial on September 30.

Police allege Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, dragged Ms Meagher into an alleyway while she was walking home, raped and strangled her.

Bayley has pleaded not guilty to murder and two charges of rape but guilty to one count of rape.

The trial will begin just a week after the first anniversary of the 30-year-old ABC worker's murder which sparked an outpouring of public grief in September last year.
