Trainer satisfied with Winx's preparation for Stakes

CHAMPION mare Winx cruised through her final track gallop this morning ahead of her attempt at a 17th consecutive win in the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

A large contingent of electronic and print media was trackside for Winx's gallop with the mighty mare working wide out on the Rosehill course proper.

"Winx wasn't out to make time this morning, it was more about stretching her legs and keeping her ticking over for Saturday," trainer Chris Waller said.

"It's been a long preparation to get this far but everything has gone to plan.

"This morning's workout was to make sure everything was working and Hugh Bowman was happy. Her breathing was right and she is moving well."

Waller revealed Winx has had a small amount of synthetic hoof filler applied to the inside of her off-fore hoof more as a precautionary measure to give added support to her hoof wall.

"There is no hole in her hoof, it is no problem at all," Waller reiterated.

Bowman said Winx "feels really strong and in good shape for Saturday".

"It gets easier with her as her preparation goes on because the fitter she gets, the stronger she becomes and the more agile she feels," Bowman said.

Winx is at $1.08 with TAB Fixed Odds to continue her famous winning streak in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, her final race of the season.

"Things went a bit quiet after the punter had $75,000 on Winx earlier in the week until another plonked $9000 on her at $1.08 this morning," TAB's Gerard Middleton said.

"Not surprisingly we've barely written a bet of note for any other runner in the race."

Meanwhile, the Darren Weir-trained Big Duke remains the best backed runner in the Sydney Cup. Big Duke is $2.80 favourite for the staying feature, while Nurse Kitchen has been popular in the Australian Oaks.
