Trailer for Assange thriller The Fifth Estate released

THE first footage showing Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange has been released by DreamWorks.

The two-and-a-half minute trailer shows the Star Trek Into Darkness and Sherlock star playing the controversial WikiLeaks founder in The Fifth Estate.

Cumberbatch has Assange's trademark white hair and speaks in a passable Australian accent.

The film, which looks at the relationship between Assange and his early supporter and eventual colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg, will be released in the US and Sweden on October 11 and in the UK on January 1, 2014.

An Australian release date has yet to be announced.

Assange will take part in a forum at the Splendour in the Grass music festival next Friday, July 26, via video link from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
