A Pacific Hwy milestone looms at Moonee Beach

TRAFFIC leaving and joining the Pacific Hwy will tomorrow flow over the Moonee Beach and Smiths Rd, Emerald Beach overpasses as the Sapphire to Woolgoolga project enters another crucial construction phase.

The work crews employed by the Leighton Contractors and Fulton Hogan consortium continue to work extended hours through the night to make up time lost to weather delays earlier in the year.

The Advocate's chief photographer Trevor Veale this week captured the latest developments on the $850 million road project, an engineering feat seeing 329 road builders reconstruct 25km of the Pacific Hwy.

Roads and Maritime Services and the project team continue to aim for completion in the second half of next year.

"Motorists will be able to drive on the Moonee Beach overpass which aims to improve access to the Moonee Beach shopping complex and reduce travel times," Mr Fraser said.

"Roads and Maritime Services will also open to traffic the Smiths Road bridge at Emerald Beach on the same day, weather permitting.

"This bridge aims to improve access to the Emerald Beach area and improve safety with a new intersection.

"As the new Smiths Road bridge opens, the temporary intersection at Smiths Road will close.

He said the new southbound off-ramp from the Pacific Highway would  be opened to traffic accessing Moonee Beach.

"This will be a great improvement for local traffic from Hoys, Old Bucca and Bucca roads and Killara Avenue who can now access the Moonee Beach shopping complex via the local service road and the new overpass," Mr Fraser said.
