Tourist road signs to highlight Qld

NEW tourist road signs to highlight Queensland's most loved icons are rolling out across the state, Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said on Wednesday.

Minister Wallace said a tourist sign showing the way to the famous Yatala pie shop is the first of 15 new tourist road signs to be erected.

"Pulling into Yatala to buy a meat pie on the way to or from the Gold Coast has become a travelling ritual for hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders over the years.

"New tourist signs to highlight our icons make sense and the Yatala pie shop is up there with the best of them," he said.

The top 15 Queensland icons chosen by 30,000 Queenslanders are:

  • Australia Zoo
  • Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame
  • Surfers Paradise
  • Bundaberg Rum Distillery
  • The Big Pineapple
  • South Bank Parklands
  • Noosa
  • Breakfast Creek Hotel
  • Yatala Pie Shop
  • Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge
  • Paronella Park
  • Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
  • Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Great Dividing Range
  • Darling Downs

"I commend Margaret Keech for her hard work behind the scenes in supporting Yatala's nomination," he said.

"You simply can't under-estimate the importance of putting our much loved icons on the map. They'll be great tourism drawcards and that's got to be good for local businesses," Mrs Keech said.
