Torrential rain throws doubts over Cup Day

UPDATE 3PM: THE Coffs Harbour Racing Club is confident the Carlton MID 2016 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup will go ahead.

The club said preparations are still underway for tomorrow's event

Racing NSW Stewards will conduct a track inspection at 6.30am to advise of any changes to the race program.

1.30PM: TORRENTIAL rain and wind has cast doubts over tomorrow's Coffs Harbour Gold Cup.

All seven of today's races have been abandoned by stewards due to heavy rain affecting track conditions.

Horses had arrived at the barriers for the opening race but 35mm of rain fell in 25 minutes.

Club officials say a decision on tomorrow's race program is too early to determine at this stage, but a final call would be made by stewards at 6am tomorrow.

If the track is not raceable, the club will switch to a secondary plan - which racing manager Russ Atkinson says is "a great party" in the form of a Phantom Race Day.

The Phantom Race Day would still be held at the club.

Discussions with corporate partners would then determine options for re-scheduling the event.

Mr Atkinson said patron and jockey safety would be at the forefront of any decision.

"If we get 100mm of rain and the track couldn't handle it, we'd be forced to call it off," he said.

"The safety of jockeys and patrons is paramount".

Around 500 people have attended today's event and have moved into the members' area ahead of a calcutta at the Pier Hotel.
