Top jockey injured and horse dies in Coffs Harbour race fall
LEADING jockey Terry Treichel is in hospital after a heavy fall at the Coffs Harbour Pink Silks meeting.
Treichel was riding Grafton-trained mare Miss Trixie in the TG Jung Quarries Plate when they came to grief not long after the start and as the field travelled down the back straight.
With the ambulance behind the horses, paramedics were on the scene quickly.
The jockey was unconscious for about seven minutes.
Stewards called a halt to racing but a decision to call the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to the racecourse was cancelled.
Treichel is now receiving treatment at Coffs Harbour Health Campus and is likely to be kept in overnight for observation.
Unfortunately, the horse was found to be severely injured and was humanely euthanised.
