Toowoomba woman's mission for her mum

LAST year Toowoomba radiation therapist Amber Summers did Relay for Life for her patients and her mum who had been undergoing intensive treatment for a brain tumour.

This year Ms Summers is already planning to relay again, but this time in memory of her mum Deborah Hughes who died in February aged just 55.

"Mum was an incredibly loving and giving person and I feel like I can somehow light a candle for that," Ms Summers said.

But it is not just Relay for Life, she wants to raise more awareness for the Cancer Council and services in Toowoomba that help, including her workplace the Radiation Oncology Centre at St Andrew's Hospital.

"It is very rewarding, which is a very cliche thing to say. But it is nice to meet different people from different walks of life," she said.

Ms Summers has a history of cancer in her family with her grandmother and uncle dying from brain tumours in 2011, but said her story was not unique with many families affected in the same way.

"In some ways it was easier, but also harder being in the line of work I was in and having that understanding of what was happening," she said.

Ms Summers will relay with her team from the Radiation Oncology Centre on May 20-21 at Queens Park..

"Mothers Day is in May, mum's birthday is in May and it's my way of giving back when I can't really give anything to her."
