T'ba misses out on Katsidis' bout
UNFRIENDLY winter weather has seen Toowoomba miss out on hosting Michael Katsidis’ next bout but the home-town champion’s team has raised the possibility of staging an open-air fight in the Garden City during summer.
Katsidis will fight Englishman Graham Earl in August in a rematch of their blockbuster 2007 bout in London.
Clive Berghofer Stadium was touted as a potential venue for the fight but it was yesterday ruled out by the Katsidis camp.
Katsidis and his trainer manager Brendon Smith met with stakeholders of the venue last Monday in front of the ground’s grandstand and subsequently decided an indoor venue was better suited to the winter fight date.
The Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall and the Gold Coast Convention Centre are now the two venues in line to host the bout, Katsidis’s first in Australia since 2006.
“We looked at all options for Toowoomba,” Smith said in a statement yesterday.
“Because of the uncertainty of weather around that time, we weren’t confident holding it outdoors.
“Unfortunately there isn’t a big enough indoor area for us to hold it.
“We want the show to be a memorable one for the fans, not one that is rained out and cold, so we have decided to hold it indoors.
“The positive that has come out of this though, is we have done our research now for a potential summer return to Toowoomba, so it hasn’t been ruled out completely.”
