Titans spoil Knights’ special day

THE big crowd at Hunter Stadium rose for Alex McKinnon, but its beloved Knights team could not rise to the occasion, losing 22-8 to the Titans yesterday.

An audience of 26,401 packed the stands to applaud the injured Newcastle back-rower as part of the Rise for Alex round.

The big turn-out ignored the grey skies to support McKinnon, who has been wheelchair-bound since a horrific injury suffered against Melbourne earlier in the season.

The visitors enjoyed a 12-0 half-time lead thanks to a long-range Anthony Don try and a barnstorming effort by Dave Taylor, but the Knights put up a spirited comeback for their injured mate in the second stanza.

Joseph Leilua and Tyrone Roberts both crossed for late tries, but a clever grubber from Daniel Mortimer for a flying James Roberts sealed the match for the under-fire Gold Coast in the final minute.

The Knights were without luck as they tried to fight their way back into the contest in the second half.

Fullback Darius Boyd was ruled to be just short of the line, and was denied again when the bounce of the ball eluded him on a chip-and-chase.
