Three jailed over brutal Wiangaree store bashing and robbery

THREE teenagers have been sentenced and two more still await their verdicts following the brutal bashing and robbery at Wiangaree General Store earlier this year.

The youths were given sentences of between two and four-plus years each in the Lismore District Court on Friday.

Police said on the afternoon of February 24 the store, just north of Kyogle, was terrorised by the five youths as they bashed the two owners before robbing the store.

Police said the youths, armed with a knife and a broomstick, bashed a then 60-year-old woman unconscious and beat up her 64-year-old husband in the robbery, stealing cash and alcohol before fleeing the scene in a stolen car.

Police arrested three of the youths the following day before arresting the other two in the days following.

At the court appearance on Friday, a 16-year-old youth from Casino received a prison term of four years and three months and a 17-year-old from Woodenbong received a prison term of three years for armed robbery and wounding.

Another 16-year-old from Casino received a term of two years for the same charge while a 13-year-old from Casino still waits to see his case before court.

A fifth youth, a 17-year-old from Tabulam, failed to turn up to court and now has warrants out for his arrest.
