This year’s Splendour went splendidly well, say cops

THE first Splendour in the Grass festival to be held at the new North Byron Parklands site at Yelgun has earned a tick from the police, who have praised the behaviour of the 25,000-strong crowds.

Police revealed across the four-day event they searched a total 353 people and 50 vehicles. Police dogs pinged a total 389 festival-goers, 282 of whom were then found to have been carrying drugs, including cannabis and MDMA (ecstasy).

The biggest bust of the festival came from one man caught allegedly carrying 102 MDMA tablets and 0.5 grams of MDMA powder.

The 21-year-old man caught with the pills and powder was charged with supplying a prohibited drug.

Beyond that, police said they issued a total 118 cannabis cautions and 130 court attendance notices and charged a total 84 people with drink driving.

Police had a heavy presence at the festival, with members of the mounted (horse) unit, the dog squad, riot squad, operational support group and police transport command.

However, with about 25,000 people going through the gates each of the festival on each of the four days, the number of people arrested over the course of the event was small, with Tweed-Byron police commander Stuart Wilkins branding the weekend a success.

"We were happy with crowd behaviour and only responded to minor issues of unacceptable behaviour and property theft," Supt Wilkins said

"Overall it was a great weekend with the crowd enjoying themselves."
