Fiasco wins best restaurant award
STEFANO Mazzina was busy putting together his new spring menu when he heard his establishment had been judged the best Italian restaurant in regional NSW.
Coffs Harbour’s Fiasco Ristorante and Wine Bar won the gong at Monday night’s 2010 Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence for NSW.
It is a second win in this category for the popular restaurant.
Fiasco was also one of six finalists in the NSW Regional Restaurant of the Year Award, won by Muse Restaurant at Pokolbin.
Stefano said it was ‘even better’ to win the award this year.
“The hardest thing is to keep the standard,” the delighted chef said. “It is a bit of recognition for the hard work you do all year.
“We are trying to improve all the time and it is very hard to do in the country.
“We have to work very hard to get local produce and we are trying to use as much local produce as we can.
“The new spring menu will be 60-70 per cent local.”
Fiasco is a family restaurant and Stefano’s father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mark and Alex Hawkins, travelled to Sydney to attend the awards, while Stefano and his wife, who have a new baby, stayed at home.
The win puts Fiasco in the running for the national award on October 25 but Stefano said the restaurant would face very stiff competition from well-resourced Victorian winery restaurants.
