Legal proceedings likely to start ex-CEO's lawyer
THE lawyer for sacked Mackay Regional Council chief executive officer Brett Heyward says legal proceedings are likely to be filed in the Supreme Court of Queensland in the next fortnight.
Brett Heyward's lawyer is Dan Williams, from law firm Minter Ellison.
"We've been instructed by Mr Heyward to prepare legal proceedings against council and its councillors," he said.
"These proceedings are in an advanced state of preparation and are likely to be filed in the next one to two weeks."
Mr Heyward was sacked by the council just a month into his job in November last year.
Since then repeated questions have been asked of Mayor Deirdre Comerford and the council regarding how the decision was made. The Daily Mercury revealed on December 19 the decision to sack Mr Heyward was made at a meeting at Cr Comerford's house.
Cr Comerford has refused to publicly say why Mr Heyward was sacked a month into the job but has said Mr Heyward knows the reason for the decision.
Former Gladstone Ports Corporation chief executive officer Craig Doyle has taken the council CEO role and begins on February 1.
Mr Heyward now has a part time job as an adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology.
