The Big Banana gets a magical makeover

Did you see the Big Banana light up the night sky on Monday?

It was all for a good cause to raise awareness about the critical need for blood donors and mark the start of Plasma Power Week.

Around 31,000 blood donors are needed every week across Australia, yet only three per cent of the Coffs Harbour community regularly donate blood.

Lifeblood is urging more locals to roll up their sleeves and donate plasma - considered the 'liquid gold' part of blood not only because of its golden colour but also for the growing list of patients it is able to help.

"Plasma and its many treatments are used to treat shock and burns, fight infectious diseases, prevent blood clots, and stop critical bleeding - often in emergency situations." said Lifeblood spokesperson Ruth Harrison.

Many locals answered a nationwide call last week for an additional 10,383 people to give blood and plasma to prevent a potential shortage earlier this week, but more is needed.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has taken time to book in a blood donation this week, and everyone who has donated under the pandemic, but we still need a steady flow of donors every day at our Coffs Harbour donor centre," Ms Harrison said.

"We'd like to reassure people that Lifeblood donor centres are safe to visit, with strict social distancing, cleaning and donor eligibility measures in place."

Only healthy people are eligible to give blood and Lifeblood has introduced even more stringent wellness checks prior to appointments, including temperature checking.
