Teen glassed as 30 attack three

A ROCKHAMPTON teenager was “glassed” by a gang of more than 30 attackers who ambushed three youths as they left a 16th birthday party in Rockhampton on Saturday night.

The violent attack occurred outside the Fitzroy Sharks football clubhouse at Rockhampton's Saleyards Park about 11pm.

One of the victims received 10 stitches for a split lip, while another was treated for deep cuts on his face and wrist after an attacker “glassed” him.

The 18-year-old, who asked not to be named, said he was glassed in the face and wrist as he raised his arm to protect himself.

He said he and his two mates had left the party to escape a brawl only to be set upon by the waiting gang.

The three 18-year-olds have since received further threats on Facebook from their attackers, who have told them they would “get worse than what they got” and they “got off easy”.

The glassing victim said one of his friends was accused of refusing to leave the party and punched in the face.

“He got a split lip so we wanted to get him out of there,” he said.

As the two teens tried to help their injured friend over a fence they were attacked by the gang.

“We knew they were out there. They were angry they weren't allowed in because no one was allowed in after 10pm,” the teenager explained.

“But we didn't expect them to attack us. My mate was covered in blood from his lip, but they just started grabbing him around the throat and bashed him around the head.”

He said five people kicked and punched his friend while he curled up in a ball on the ground and the rest of the group cheered them on.

“I tried to grab them off him and that's when they started into me,” he said.

“One of them glassed me in the face.”

An ambulance spokesman confirmed officers were called about an incident at the venue, but the victims were not located.

The victim said he and the other teenagers ran to the nearby Saleyards Hotel Motel, where the hotel manager called the police.

Paramedics later took the victim and his friend to hospital for treatment.

Police said they were investigating leads in the case.

Acting Senior Sergeant Allan Fleming encouraged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

The victim's father was outraged by the attack.

“I've got another son, who got into glassing and he was not kept accountable by police,” the father said.

“He got off scot-free, so I marched him to the police station. If they're not taught it's wrong, what's going to stop them from doing it again?”
